When organizing a party, we often think about the food and decor, but I also like to put effort in preparing party favors for my guests. It’s a little gesture that will help them remember the great time spent at the party. It’s even more fun when I get to DIY the party favors, and today, I’d like to share with you one of my favorites - Cookies in a Jar, a recipe inspired by Bakerella.
Finding ideas for party favors may not always come easily, however, when there’s a theme, I think it’s much easier to come up with ideas.
For my sister Sam’s baby shower, I decided to base it on one of her favorite children’s author - Dr. Seuss. The theme was based on “Cat in the Hat” but more particularly, Sam-I-Am from “Green Eggs and Ham”. I wanted to plan a party with an unusual and unexpected theme, but that was guaranteed fun for all who attended. I personally really like the story of “The Cat in a Hat”. His rhymes are genius, and kids love his stories. Since it was a baby shower, I thought to myself why not plan a party surrounding a theme that relates to kids? That’s how the idea of “The Cat in a Hat” theme came from.
I also wanted to come up with an original idea for the party favors, and to make the party favors more special, I decided to prepare something myself. I thought it would be fun to look for an easy recipe to bake cookies and have everything put in a jar. That way, guests can make these sweets without having to bring out their measuring cups. It’s easy, quick and fun! The best part, the parents can do it with their kids, and personally for me, I like doing activities with my kids that will make create long-lasting memories.
- 1 quart Mason jar which I found at Canadian Tire that were sold by the dozen.
- 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour, leveled
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup cooking oats
- 1 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 slightly beaten egg
1/2 cup butter (melted slightly in the microwave)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix wet ingredients separately and then add them to the dry ingredients. Use the back of a large spoon to work it all together. You may even need to use your hands to get everything incorporated.
Roll the cookie dough into 1 1/2 inch balls, place on a parchment covered baking sheet and bake for about 10-12 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven.
Layer the ingredients in like this:
First: flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt
Third: chocolate chips
Fourth: brown sugar
Fifth: white sugar
Sixth: chopped pecans
Make sure you pack each level down really tightly or else you risk not fitting everything in. I decided to add the chopped pecans last in case you need to adjust by adding more or less to ensure that everything fits! The ingredients should be flush to the top of the lid or as close as possible when you seal it up.
As for the labels, I customized everything on StickerYou!
The guests still talk to me about these cookies whenever I see them!
I hope you enjoy them as much as they did and have as much fun making these for your special guest of honor! If you do, feel free to post your cookies in a jar DIY party favors on Instagram and use the hashtag #mystylishthemedparty. We'd love to see your creations!
